Like many other people I am furious over the "relief effort" not being made by our government. What can we do? Prayer is always at the top of my list, of course donate to the Red Cross, then what? I hate to be the one to tell you this but this is not the last disaster we have to face, tomorrow it could be an earthquake or worse. Our Government has to become prepared before the emergency and respond immediately, not a week or two or three afterwards when everyone is dead. I received this in my email today. I am going to forward this to as many people as I can. Let the Government know this is worse than not acceptable, it's an outrage! Let your voice be heard! Hi Blu,
The blatant manipulation of science for political purposes has dangerous implications for our environment and public health.
Send your elected officials a message loud and clear: tell them you won't tolerate the abuse of science to advance their political agenda! I don't know about you, but I'm starting to think the White House has a serious case of science "phobia."
Consider this recent specimen: in June we learned that Phil Cooney, chief of staff of the White House's Council on Environmental Equality, re-wrote government reports in order to significantly downplay the scientific certainty on global warming. But Mr. Cooney is not a scientist - he's a lawyer who used to work as an oil industry lobbyist.
Take action: go.care2.com/e/EgC/Ae/fE_z
Not surprisingly, after the New York Times disclosed Cooney's role in doctoring government reports, he left the Bush Administration and took a job with ExxonMobil, the world's largest oil company and chief supporter of "junk science," which aims to create doubt in the minds of the media and general public that global warming is actually occurring.
The blatant manipulation of science for political purposes has dangerous implications for our environment and public health. Fortunately, this fact hasn't gone unnoticed in the scientific community. More than 6,000 scientists to date, including Nobel Laureates, have signed a letter asserting that the Bush Administration has a pattern of distorting and censoring important scientific work in order to advance their partisan political agenda.
But now we need your help. Elected officials in Congress need to hear from their constituents that the manipulation of science is undemocratic and undermines our ability to responsibly address the most important ecological issues confronting our nation.
Send your legislators a message!
The blatant manipulation of science for political purposes has dangerous implications for our environment and public health.
Send your elected officials a message loud and clear: tell them you won't tolerate the abuse of science to advance their political agenda! Thank you for taking action today!

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition: Tell Elected Officials: Stop Playing Politics with Science! Target: U.S. Senate, House of Representatives Sponsor: Union Of Concerned ScientistsSignatures: 13,535 Goal: 25,000 Deadline: 9-15-2005 Recently, we've been overwhelmed with news about political appointees manipulating, distorting, and suppressing the science on global warming – as well as on other issues such as mercury pollution and lead poisoning. Political interference in science has dangerous implications for our health, safety and environment.
In June, we learned that White House chief of staff on the Council on Environmental Quality, Phil Cooney, personally edited and distorted scientific reports, and in doing so significantly downplayed the scientific certainty on global warming. But Mr. Cooney is not a scientist - he's a lawyer who used to work as an oil industry lobbyist. After the New York Times revealed Cooney's involvement in doctoring government reports on behalf of the Bush administration, he left his job and took a position with ExxonMobil, the world's largest oil company and leading critic of global warming science.
Then in July, scientists accused U.S. Representative Joe Barton (R-TX) of harassing and intimidating prominent climate scientists over their findings on global warming.
With the scientific facts and the impacts of global warming clear, doesn't it make you wonder whose interests our government officials are looking out for?
It's time to let our elected officials know we won't tolerate their manipulation of science for political purposes! See full petition below Email this to your friends! Tell Elected Officials: Stop Playing Politics with Science!
Dear [your senator/representative]:
The role of science in our society is to ask questions, to facilitate free and open access to information, to provide facts and evidence that can guide and shape policy, and to contribute to the betterment of society through technological improvements. Scientific discoveries and innovations play a critical role in increasing our nation's living standards, ensuring our national security and improving our families' health and well being. The application of scientific information is essential in guiding public policy decisions.
Yet to be effective, science depends on adherence to fundamental principles in its pursuit and application. These principles include objectivity, the use of rigorous research methods, transparency, and the disclosure of potential biases and real or perceived conflicts of interest.
In order to preserve the core values in science and science-based decision making, our nation's policies should uphold fundamental scientific principles and practices. We call upon you to make a commitment to policies that will support those principles.
These policies should: Ensure that scientific and health information and reports provided by the government are based on full and informed assessments of all relevant data, done in an independent manner, free of financial conflicts of interest.
Ensure that scientists are not pressured to delay, suppress, or alter scientific or medical information that may be in conflict with the administration's political position, and are not penalized if they resist such pressure.
Ensure that the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) is fully enforced, to make certain that scientific advisory committees are able to provide the highest quality independent scientific advice to the government, without political or ideological bias. Ensure that people who do not have adequate scientific qualifications are not appointed to scientific advisory positions.
Safeguard against subjecting scientists to ideological or political litmus tests for advisory committees and civil service positions.
Ensure that the President and Congress get scientific advice as early as possible in the decision-making process, and that this is done in a transparent fashion.
Ensure that the lack of complete certainty or irrefutable proof does not erode time-honored precautionary approaches to public health and environmental protections.
The suppression and distortion of scientific information erodes credibility and public trust in government, and may compromise the health and safety of Americans.
Sincerely, [your name]

Tell your legislators about Katrina!
Apparently we have left our government officials without TV and radios! Email them and let them know We The People will not tolerate abandoning our own Mothers, Fathers and Children to starvation and death. Maybe their lap tops are up and running! The warning is clear, every coastal city in the world is facing another Katrina and the coast lines are sinking. This is a scientific fact, not a future event, it is happening now.
Let them know that we need a more responsive Government in a time of crisis, that FEMA must have independent ability to respond! When Wal-Mart delivered 3 trucks of water to our desperate and dying people the first day after Katrina FEMA turned it back and told them the people did not need it! This is an OUTRAGE! The communication lines for Government officials who were desperately trying to save their people were cut by the GOVERNMENT! The Sheriff had to post ARMED Guards to protect their phone lines from our own Government!
The dead can not speak for them selves and we are all responsible for this tragedy in the failure of Government to respond to them in their hour of need. I am begging you please to make your outrage known. Do not let bureaucracy defeat the heart and will of our blessed nation.
I just heard the poor Governor of Louisiana say she would punch GW Bush if he or anyone else criticized her or her officials for evacuating the prisoners again. I got news for her, she should go ahead and punch him! I will hold the worm for her. I hope he enjoyed his photo op in LA, that will go down in history as the biggest comedy on TV in our century.
This web site will help you locate your local and state officials. Let them know we want change and we want it now! United States House of Representatives
