"Lesson Two: The Healing Sound"
(02:19:31) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Today, we are continuing on with the “Music As The Bridge” series, and we’ll be going over Lesson Two: “The Healing Sound” today. Please feel free to stop me and comment or ask questions at any time!
(02:20:01) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Lesson Two: The Healing Sound
(02:20:17) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “…sounds, music and colors may have much to do with creating the proper vibrations about individuals that are mentally unbalanced, physically deficient or ill in body and mind…” – Edgar Cayce Reading 1334-1
(02:20:47) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Of the many recognized effects of music, the most widely accepted is it’s ability to change the moods of man. We respond positively to music which produces the feelings we desire.
(02:21:08) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Edward Benjamine of New Orleans has established a Foundation for Restful Music. It commissions composers to write tranquil music, to bridge the active periods of the day with the quiet time of sleep. Every change in man must be preceded by a change in mood or temperament.
(02:21:38) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “…we find the entity was in the Atlantean land, when the people were entering into other lands for their preservation of their activities through those periods when destructions were coming to the land.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 824-1
(02:21:59) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “The entity then was among those who were the leaders into what is now known as the Egyptian land, bringing with same much of what may be made from the electron music where color, vibration, activities make for toning same with the emotions of individuals or peoples that may make for their temperaments being changed.
(02:22:24) (Host-WalksInSpirit) And same may be applied by the entity in those associations with what may be called the temperaments of individuals, where they are possessed - as it were - by the influences from without, and those that are ill from diseases that have become of a nature or vibratory influence within the body as to set themselves as a vibration in the body.
(02:22:46) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The entity may make such tones, colors, sounds, activities, as to be very beneficial to those whom the entity may desire to aid.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 824-1
(02:23:12) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Often there must be an outlet for the expression of a mood before it can be changed. Music may provide such an outlet.
(02:23:48) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “The influences through Venus as well as Uranus and Neptune make for the ability of the entity to play upon stringed instruments, especially the viola or the cello, that have been or may be channels through which the entity may find an outlet for its moods of ecstasy, either emotional of the body or of the soul
(02:24:01) (Host-WalksInSpirit) in the airs of same that partake often of the mysteries of nature and its influence upon the souls as well as the minds of men; as well as an outlet for the periods of sadness or depression.” - Edgar Cayce Reading 1904-2
(02:24:32) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Early man was aware of the significance of this power and used it to control groups of people to a specific end. We find even today the use of accelerated drum rhythms to excite frenzy and passion. A chanted word, or short phrase keeps a group cohesive and brave. The moment the chant is stopped, each participant again becomes conscious of his individuality.
(02:24:58) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “Life in its manifestation is vibration. Electricity is vibration. But vibration that is creative is one thing. Vibration that is destructive is another. Yet they may be from the same source.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 1861-16
(02:25:28) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Eventually, we come to realize that man has the ability to exercise choice. It is only at the instance of desire that passions are allowed to take over, and man forfeits his divine gift of free will. Jesus said that man is not defiled by what goes into the body but by what comes out; in this instance it is the overt response rather than the sound that is important.
(02:25:43) (Roz) stringed instruments help one to reach a higher state of consciousness
(02:26:50) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Yep. And Cayce recommneded them above brass instruments.
(02:27:23) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Dances which emphasize hip movements simulate the rhythms of procreation. This is an example of a rhythm started by choice, impelled by creative energy and pre-conditions by the mind. The compelling mood of procreation is controlled in the dance by a shifting of the hip rhythm to a sideways movement.
(02:27:44) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The excitement, pleasure and ability to relate to basic rhythm are learned and stimulated by dances such as the hula, the rumba and the like. The Readings tell us that music in relation to these rhythms should be the study of every one because they are intended for the continuation of the race.
(02:28:08) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Any stimulation which causes the forces of creativity to be expressed at the gonad level for reasons other than the creation of a channel for new life is out of harmony with the initial cause.
(02:28:30) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “as indicated, music is that which appeals to the latent and creative force within the entity. For music alone may span that sphere from the sublime to the ridiculous, to the finite to the infinite, from the spheres of activity… Music can be a destructive or creative force, dependent upon that to which it appeals in the influence of individuals.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 3509-1
(02:29:04) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “But the entity in the present may enter into that manner of expression in music which will BEST bring HEALING and strength to the body, to the desires towards spiritual things. THESE be the channels through which the entity may gain the most.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 949-12
(02:29:35) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Although the inclination is to feel that the mind builds slowly and laboriously, music illustrates the rapidity of reaction between the mind and mood, or between choice and effect. It is the consent of the mind which allows music to create a mood which conditions the activity of the body. Moods of depression, sadness and inadequacy may be altered by music.
(02:30:13) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “Whenever there are the periods of depression, or the feeling low or forsaken, play music; especially stringed instruments of every nature. These will enable the entity to span that gulf as between pessimism and optimism.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 1804-1
(02:30:58) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The Bible suggests a remedy for these moods of unhappiness and depression stating, (Take) “the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.” We find the injunction of singing praises repeatedly in the Bible and in the Readings.
(02:31:20) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “Then, sing a lot about the work - in everything the body does. Hum, sing - to self; not to be heard by others but to be heard by self.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 3386-1
(02:31:43) (Host-WalksInSpirit) If, when we are in the spirit of “heaviness,” we change the spirit to one of thanksgiving and praise, Creative Energy will expand and underscore the spirit we choose to express.
(02:32:16) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “Abilities are limited only by what spirit of creative energy the entity entertains. For thy body is indeed the temple of the living God. There He promises to meet thee. Will ye accept less than He who is the light, and life of the world? In whom do ye live and move and have thy being? Who was indeed the first of everything? He is the first and the last.
(02:32:35) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Embrace Him, while ye may, in music, in art. Faint not because of oppositions, but do keep the music of the spheres, the light of the stars, the softness of the moonlight upon the water as upon the trees. For nature in its song, as the birds, as the bees make music to their Creator, contributed to man.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 5265-1
(02:33:06) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Since the laws controlling the effects of music are “as fixed and immutable as the laws of mathematics,” we can begin to draw some conclusions from our observations. Moods may be quickened or calmed by music. In the use of musical therapy, “mood changing” is the important technique.
(02:33:27) (Host-WalksInSpirit) It is known as the “iso” principle (iso meaning equal). The therapist must match the mood and the tempo of the music to the mood and tempo of the patient to attract his attention. In a depressed situation the minor key and slow tempo may be the “iso” starting point.
(02:33:45) (Host-WalksInSpirit) After the patient’s attention level has been found, and communication established, the music may be slowly raised in volume, changed in key, and quickened in tempo. When there is a modification in the patient’s mood, he becomes receptive to communication with the objective world.
(02:34:15) (Host-WalksInSpirit) One of the pioneers in this field was Harriet Ayers Seymore of New York City, who organized the National Foundation Of Musical Therapy in 1941. Many musicians have been trained and placed through its help.
(02:34:42) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. has long recognized and incorporated similar techniques in dealing with shell-shock or battle-fatigue as it is now called. The Readings speak directly to this point.
(02:35:21) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “In music should the entity excel, in the stringed instruments, harp or plane, and such music should be used for the applications in healing,
(02:35:37) (Host-WalksInSpirit) or as part of the entity's endeavor to reclaim individual entities that are disturbed by nerve or shell shock or long weariness in the out-of-the-way places. For these are abilities with the entity that may be surpassed only by very few.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 3908-1
(02:36:24) (Host-WalksInSpirit) How do the medical authorities who practice musical therapy explain this process? Dr. Ira M. Altschuler of Wayne County General Hospital in Eloise, Michigan has concluded that the very mechanism of the brain itself is responsible for the healing effect of music.
(02:36:46) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Music, he discovered, reacts in the thalamus gland which, from it’s location at the base of the brain, functions as a relay station for vibrations, which in turn stimulate unconscious automatic responses. Tapping of the fingers and swaying in time with the music are often results of this process.
(02:37:19) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The conscious appreciation of music is developed as the vibration is transmitted to the cortex of the brain where the higher elements of thinking and reasoning take place.
(02:37:19) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The thalamus is best stimulated by the violin or flute according to Dr. Altschuler. The Readings concur:
(02:37:32) (ky-mike) soul music ... 4 the brain
(02:37:59) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “Thus the lute, as well as the stringed instruments, become those that act more as the soothing influence, as well as those in which the entity may in its dance interpret the better; rather than the brass instruments.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 2700-1
(02:38:22) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Based upon his research and practice, Dr. Altschuler offers four ways in which music may act to modify behavior:
(02:38:22) (Host-WalksInSpirit) 1. There is a change in blood pressure, respiration, pulse, metabolism and muscular energy.
(02:38:22) (Host-WalksInSpirit) 2. It demands attention and prolongs concentration span.
(02:38:22) (Host-WalksInSpirit) 3. It can stimulate imagination and intelligence.
(02:38:22) (Host-WalksInSpirit) 4. It can modify the mood by calming disturbed feelings and bringing about more normal attitudes.
(02:38:38) (Roz) German militant music make ya want to fight!!
(02:38:57) (Host-WalksInSpirit) LOL true, Roz!
(02:39:06) (ky-mike) ya voll
(02:39:30) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Since each person has a distinctly different make-up, the specialist seems to agree that the time will come when a “musical prescription” will be available to fit the unique problem of each individual. Such was given by Cayce to a young woman who was suffering from insanity.
(02:39:41) (diane) lol, mike
(02:39:50) (ky-mike) ty
(02:40:05) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “Keep about the body the colors of purple and lavender, and all things bright; music that is of harmony - as of the Spring Song, the Blue Danube and that character of music, with either the stringed instruments or the organ. These are the vibrations that will set again near normalcy, - yea, normalcy, mentally and physically…” – Edgar Cayce Reading 2712-1
(02:40:31) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The following Reading relates vibratory forces with healing and suggests that formal academic study is indicated for their understanding.
(02:41:11) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “13. (Q) Would it be desirable for me to devote all of my time to the study of music in order to obtain the proper understanding for me to proceed with the study of the mental forces that affect or influence the individual?
(02:41:28) (Host-WalksInSpirit) (A) It has been indicated that it would be better for this to be a PORTION of the study, and the greater portion in the technique of the application of electrical forces through application to the body itself.
(02:41:43) (Host-WalksInSpirit) 16. (Q) Through what specific school and course would I obtain a closer insight into the study of the forces or music of the spheres?
(02:41:43) (Host-WalksInSpirit) (A) The lower electrical vibrations to life!
(02:42:33) (Host-WalksInSpirit) 17. (Q) What is meant by the rhythmic side of my development and experience, and how may I gain the proper understanding of this?
(02:42:34) (Roz) wonder wht rap does?
(02:42:49) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Trashes the brain, I'd say, Roz!
(02:42:56) (ky-mike) a downer
(02:43:43) (Host-WalksInSpirit) (A) This is indicated in that we have given for the consideration in the MATERIAL things, see? that the RHYTHMIC vibrations of the body, as to music, set the electrical forces in the physical body. As: An activity of the brain upon the nervous system makes for the releasing of vibration.
(02:43:59) (Roz) spose ya mixed rap and country could ya call it crap?
(02:44:12) (Host-WalksInSpirit) LOL Roz
(02:44:13) (ron) lol
(02:44:25) (diane) lol@Roz
(02:44:42) (Anonymous) lol I like that Roz....it's funnnnnnny!!!
(02:44:48) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Hence the study of music as related to electrical vibration and electrical applications for the human body, or as a technician in same, brings BOTH to bear upon that which will make for the greater understanding by the entity.
(02:45:14) (Host-WalksInSpirit) For many an individual that has had a brain wreck might be aided by electricity and music to a revivification of those cells, of those atomic forces that need their coercion and their regeneration by their absorbing one into another - rather than being separated and fighting its own self, or lack of proper coagulation of the cellular forces in the blood and brain forces; as in some forms of dementia,
(02:45:29) (Host-WalksInSpirit) strained by great religious fervor or excitement that makes for the separation of that which is the SPIRITUAL and the MATERIAL applications THROUGH the vibratory forces of a physical body.
(02:45:46) (Host-WalksInSpirit) 18. (Q) Are there any books or studies or courses recommended for me to aid in my development?
(02:45:46) (Host-WalksInSpirit) (A) As indicated, begin along those lines first in the preparatory forces of physics, biology, pathology, and the application of the musical vibrations to same.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 933-2
(02:46:06) (Host-WalksInSpirit) To what extent can music be helpful in physical illness? Edgar Cayce explained it this way:
(02:46:32) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “Every individual entity is on certain vibrations. Every dis-ease or disease is creating in the body the opposite or non-coordinant vibration with the conditions in a body-mind and spirit of the individual. If there is used certain vibrations there may be seen the response. In some it is necessary for counteraction, in some it is necessary for changes.
(02:48:19) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Then, the better way is to first develop in thine own consciousness, with the various individuals, or thine own pupils, or thy associates or thy companion, that vibration which is in rhythm with the vibration of that body.
(02:48:36) (Host-WalksInSpirit) To be sure, moods often apparently change this vibration; yet by study, by practise and by application, the vibration of the body may be ascertained.
(02:48:55) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Thus there are the needs for the aiding in using such for healing, or the dissipating, - that is, the dissipating of suppressions…
(02:49:15) (Host-WalksInSpirit) As just indicated, the finding of that to which the body-mind responds; not just what it likes, or dislikes, but that which strikes a vibrant chord within the consciousness of the individual.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 1861-12
(02:49:41) (Host-WalksInSpirit) We would naturally assume that the deaf could not be helped by music, yet the following Reading demonstrates an unsuspected relationship between physical hearing and the spiritual nature:
(02:50:00) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “To what has the body attuned itself as to its hearing? Hearing is one of the senses of the nervous systems of the body, and the nervous system of the sensory organism which is as the passage between mental and spiritual aspirations of an individual entity.
(02:50:20) (Host-WalksInSpirit) True there are purely pathological conditions, yet these - if attuned to or centered upon the spiritual things and spiritual desires - may indeed be helped so that, even with the loss of auditory reaction there may be even greater hearing attuned by the body.
(02:50:42) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Attune self to the divine within, using the abilities of every nature for the reconstruction of self as well as that about self. For if you would have hearing, give it and make the listening to something that the entity might accomplish be worthwhile - and ye will hear.” – Edgar Cayce Reading 3697-1
(02:51:05) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The Reading indicated that man’s first awareness of the healing quality in music was in prehistoric Egypt:
(02:51:45) (Host-WalksInSpirit) “In the one before this we find the entity that ruler, that king in power, when the handwriting was given that those would be measured in the balance and those found wanting would be called to reckoning.
(02:52:19) (Host-WalksInSpirit) The entity then lost through that experience, and in those forces that deal with the physical application or physical RESULT of application of abilities we find the entity meriting many of those hardships through which the present experience brings to the entity; yet with all that, the love of harmony, that of the ability to listen ever for that warning, brings much to the entity, and -
(02:52:41) (Host-WalksInSpirit) applied in the present sphere - may bring the development of the entity far along the way of gaining the more perfect understanding of the unison of forces as applied in the spiritual and mental realm, and of its application to physical forces in a material plane.

(02:23:12) (Host-WalksInSpirit) Often there must be an outlet for the expression of a mood before it can be changed. Music may provide such an outlet.
