No Soul Left Behind: 07-09-07
CHAPTER IV - Part 1 of 2 – Holistic Healing – “No Soul Left Behind”
CAYCE has been referred to as the ‘father of holistic medicine’. Put simply, holistic medicine is a revolutionary way of treating illness and disease that take into account the patient’s mental and spiritual conditions as well as physical symptoms. At the heart of Cayce’s unique approach is a belief that the body is capable of healing and sustaining itself when favorable conditions bring body, mind and spirit into balance. The healing arts merely assist that natural process when needed.
Q: What is the distinctive principle behind holistic healing?
A: “That the body-physical, the body-mental, and the body-spiritual are one.” 1441-1
Q: But if just the body is ailing, don’t you treat it just as a physical ailment?
A: “All healing is of the spiritual, or within self. The influences [on the human body come from within ~~ a gift of the animating life force ~~ and] are the same as in all nature. [Thus, animals and plants, no less than human, benefit from healing energies from within when properly nurtured.]” 1019-1
Q: So what do you prescribe for a sick person?
A: “A portion of [whatever] we find lacking in the body [such as vitamins or minerals; otherwise] . . . there is the inability to resuscitate or to reproduce the resuscitation and the life forces.” 1019-1
Q: Don’t you use medications to cure the patient?
A: “no medicine, no appliance, cures. It only attunes the body for the activity of the living forces and living vibrations within the human system [allowing the body to heal naturally]. For every element that is necessary for the sustaining of health and of the coordination of same may be created within the body if each portion [bodily function, such as adequate circulation to remove wastes] is coordinating one with another.” 1151-5
Q: The public is bombarded with advertisements for prescription drugs that are said to bring relief from specific painful conditions such as arthritis. Are these not beneficial?
A: “No . . . The causes [of the ailment] must be reached . . . Even the properties suggested [for such remedies] afford only temporary relief, unless the causes are corrected. So it is with . . . any properties supposed to supply energies to the body ~~ it cannot of great benefit unless the internal activity of the glandular force within the organ itself can be stimulated to produce the properties necessary to keep the normal balance.
“Hence any exterior or superficial addition to the body [such as an anti-acid medication] is only temporary in its effect, unless we restore the activity of the source of supply so that it produces from the foods taken that to supply all portions of the body that are deficient. It is upon the source of supply [of energies] from within that the body depends for its resuscitation. Hence to rely upon exterior influences, or some compound to supply that which the body itself needs to create, is futile. Even if it offers temporary benefit, it is not getting at the source of the trouble and other portions must eventually suffer. Hence it is futile to even think that the condition will become normal under such applications ~~ unless the cause is reached from within the body!” 189-7 “Footnote: Under ideal conditions, the body can heal itself, but the reverse is also true: deprived of essential needs it suffers. Simon Gabbay, in Visionary Medicine, tells of patients in western New York suffering from severe myopathy, a muscle disorder that confined them to wheelchairs. When given high-potency vitamin D supplements, all patients improved within six weeks, and some were able to walk free again. ‘Vitamin D deficiency if widespread . . . where people don’t get enough sunshine on a regular basis,’ writes Gabbay. ‘Poor nutrition, fat-restricted diets, and intestinal malabsorption are other contributing factors.’
Q: What about such ‘wonder drugs’ as penicillin? Haven’t they haled people of infectious diseases?
A: “No medicine, no mechanical appliance does the healing. It only attunes the body to a perfect coordination [of the organs and their functional] and the Divine gives the healing. For life is divine, and each atom in a body that becomes cut off by disease . . . or an injury, then only needs awakening to its necessity of coordination, cooperation with the other [parts] . . . to fulfill the purpose for which the body, the soul, came into being.” 1546-1 Footnote: ‘Antibiotics, which qre useful in combating serious infections, can also interfere with the essential absorption of nutrients in the small intestines, thus reducing the natural power of the immune system to ward off disease.’
Q: In other words, we need to respect the body’s natural healing capability?
A: “All that may be added to the body is only to enable each organ to reproduce itself in a consistent way and manner, and it will get rid of drosses [wastes or impurities] with its reproduction. For, as in the spiritual life you grow in grace, in knowledge, in understanding of the law of God, you also in the mental life grow in . . . awareness of your associations with spiritual and material activities. So in the mental and spiritual, these throw off. For, have you not heard how that constantly there is the change, and that the body has in a seven-year cycle reproduced itself entirely? No need for anyone, then, to have any disturbance over that length of period, if by common sense there would be the care taken. But if your mind holds to it, and you’ve got a stumped toe, it will stay stumped! If you’ve got a bad condition in your gizzard, or liver, you’ll keep it ~~ if you think so,. But the body ~~ the physical, the mental, and [the] spiritual ~~ will remove same, if you will let it and not hold to the disturbance!
Q: I’ve known people who relied completely on natural healing and refused prescription drugs. Do you recommend that?
A: “As we have indicated so often, when there are disturbances in the physical that are of a physical nature, these need to be tended to or treated, or application made, through physical means. There is as much of God in the physical as there is in the spiritual or mental, for it should be one! But it was necessary, when the Master [Jesus] demonstrated [during his various healings], to use what was needed in the bodies of individuals as curative forces as it was in the mental. To some He gave, ‘Thy sins be forgiven thee’. To others He applied clay. To others they were dipped in water, To others, they must show themselves to the priest . . . These are one. Understand them as one, yet do not attempt, at all times, to heal with word [such as prayer] when mechanical [such as chiropractic adjustments] or other means are necessary to attune some disturbed portion with the mental and the spiritual forces of the body. Remember, the spirit is ever willing; the flesh is weak.” 69-5
Q: What place does the mind have in sickness and in healing?
A: “Negative thought as well as sometimes negative reactions [such as anger or hostility] have allowed some of the disturbances [ailments] to become a constitutional condition [deleterious to the person’s physique]. Hence these [negative factors] must be taken into consideration in the manner in which these have affected and do affect the functioning of the organs of the body itself.
It is very true that mind is the control, Mind is the builder, and mind may be made wholly a spiritual force or source. Yet remember, these [ailments] related to a physical being work through a physical organism, in every atom of which there are energies within themselves. Hence often there are the needs [in a malfunctioning organ] . . . that there be the application of the mechanical means [such as a chiropractic adjustment or a massage to stimulate circulation] as well as the influences that will work directly upon the functioning of the system as related to the physical body. 1471-1
“Keep constructive influences and forces ever as a portion of the mental self [one’s frame of mind]. Know that the mental forces [thoughts] are the builders, and that the attitude which is known by the body builds the environment [for the body] ~~ and the environment makes the physical reactions.” 979-9
Q: You mean that our attitudes affect our health?
A: “To be sure, attitudes often influence the physical conditions of the body. No one can hate his neighbor and not have stomach or liver trouble. No one can be jealous and allow the anger of same and not have upset digestion or heart disorder. 1074-1
“For the body-physical-mental self, the Mind is the builder. The attitude individuals maintain, as an entity, toward conditions, individuals, and activities, creates that atmosphere for the supplying of energies from which has been taken the material for supplying the physical body.
“Thusly, if one partakes of the fruit of the vine, or of cereal or of what not, and then holds the attitude of fire or resentment or animosity or hate ~~ what can the spiritual and mental self do with such an attitude in those environs created by the attitude for such an assimilation or digestion in a body active in material forces! 1662-1
“Keep the mental attitude in a constructive manner. Know within self that the physical elements may be built; that the mind is the builder; that the manner in which the spiritual influences and forces may act upon the system builds that which is held in the deeper mental force. Keep it, then, constructive! Do not think negatively. 1074-1
“As to the attitudes, be not only good; but good for something, and this not only as related to self but in its relations to others.” 3008-1
Q: How do you go about spiritual healing?
A: “A great deal has been and may be accomplished in the work, in the study of spiritual healing; and these should be kept as a part of the experience of each individual. Because there are periods when ~~ with the associations of idea, as well as ideals ~~ it is necessary for the application of mechanical and medicinal properties in the experience of each. And, there are experiences when apparently there is the failure on the part of either [spiritual or medicinal] to bring material help to many, according to the idea [expectations for healing] of an individual. Such experiences [failures] have tended to create a laxness on the part of many [patients], and a questioning within self as to the need, or as to the use of it.” 281-45
Q: You mean that people may give up or become pessimistic if they don’t see positive healing results in short order. So what is the alternative?
A: “Be first consistent in your activities [treatment] and in your thoughts, and in your purposes, in your hopes, and in your desires day by day. And in the application of those truth, or those examples as were given by Him, as well as in your relationships to your fellows;, be persistent, as well as consistent [to effect improvement].” 281-40
Q: I assume you respect the power of prayer for healing, but what do you say to those who favor only the scientific methods of modern medicine?
A: “Prayer is just as scientific as the knife, in its individual field. Mechano-therapy or mechanical treatments [chiropractic, osteopathy, or various forms of physical therapy] are as effective in the individual field, and are of the same source as prayer ~~ if applies in the same way or manner, or with the same sincerity . . .
“For those who desire to cause activities [with healing intent] through the influence of dine forces, let us consider: What were the methods used by Him [Jesus], upon whom each one calls? Just by speaking, just by prayer, just by fasting? No. Was there not anointing? Was there not washing? Was there not mechano-therapy? Were not even other conditions used in combination with them all?” 1456-1
Q: You’re pointing out that Jesus, probably the world’s most famous healer, applied whatever healing method was appropriate. I gather that you feel that while prayer is valuable and should be included when seeking a healing, it is not always sufficient. I say that because in one case you were asked if Christian Science alone would heal the ailing person. Tell us how you answered.
A: “If it had been the most advisable, this alone would have been suggested. But let’s have all the spiritual life, all the mental life, and [all] the physical life consistent [with one] another. For they each have their part in the whole. Just as Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit are the Godhead; so the Body, the Mind, the Soul [or the Spirit] are one in the physical body, but each performs that function in the consciousness of man, just as the Godhead does in man’s indwelling in the earth.” 1456-2
