I feel as though it is time to share another story from my life admitting that there was a message to me that stayed tucked away in a drawer for a little more than 20 years.
My brother, Harry, is an alcoholic. I dearly love him but the disease keeps us apart.
20 years or so ago my brother needed money. He came to see me and asked me to purchase a Sucrets tin with coins in it. He wanted $20.00. He said he bought it from someone in the bar but now needed money.
Perhaps somewhere along the way these coins were stolen by someone.
I had never closely looked at the coins. I knew there were some pennies but had tucked the tin away in a drawer.
In 2000 I was cleaning out "stuff" and came across the tin. Looking over each and every coin I found one...the one I was supposed to see.....perhaps my brother was supposed to see it too. It is a coin from the Civil War, a coin originally sold to make money for the war effort....
The start of Bake Sales?
The coin is Northern, I am a Yankee with a Southern Heart. The date on the coin is 1863. It bears the likeness of George Washington. On the back of this coin there are crossed cannons, a wreath of perhaps laurel and a saying which reads, "No Compromise With Traitors".
As a Christian I had misunderstood "Turn The Other Cheek". I suppose that was easy enough as my last name contains "Mat" in it....unthruths and jokes I had believed for many years.
Finding the coin and the true meaning of "Turning the Other Cheek" has made me stronger and very thankful for the lessons I have learned.
