Memories of Edgar Cayce
Her reading was helpful to her and she had an experience with Cayce that demonstrated his conscious psychic abilities.
Several months ago, Lela Sherman, an SA.R.E. life member from Montana, gave Sme a call. She is 100, “fast approaching 101,” and had some feedback on the life reading she received from Edgar Cayce and a story about her experience with him at that time. I met Lela perhaps 15 years ago in Los Angeles. I wanted to hear about her readings as well as a special project she had been working on. She invited me to have a late-night glass of champagne with her on the roof of her apartment building, because there was a full moon and it was easier to talk there! I realized then, this was quite a lady. She became interested in ideas like those in the Cayce readings when at the age of 15 a summer tutor/helper went with the family from New York to a ranch in Wyoming for the summer and brought along a book, Beyond the Spheres. It was a book on metaphysical thought that opened new worlds to Lela. Years later in New York City, she and a friend ran the East-West Book Center – a gathering place for such folks. She has fascinating stories of that time and characters such as Evangeline Adams, the astrologer, and others. Lela’s life reading is one of many that gave important information on astrology. Here are a couple of examples: “Then, sojourns in those environs – that are as the companions of this our own present solar system – bear upon the urges or influences in the material plane because of the entity having had an indwelling there during the interims between the periods of material consciousness… “As to what the entity’s relationships are to be with such through this experience will depend upon the application of the will. Know, there is no urge – astrologically, nor from the sojourns in Earth, either from the past or present – that surpasses the will of an individual.” 2113-1 Lela felt that a number of observations in her life reading regarding strengths and weaknesses, talents, and possible life directions were accurate and helpful, but she was especially interested in talking about one aspect of her life reading: all four past-life incarnations given in her reading were male. (In most of the approximately 2,000 life readings Edgar Cayce gave, four to six past lives were mentioned as having an important influence on the current lifetime, although each individual has many past lives. Most often the pertinent past-life incarnations were of the same sex as the present incarnation.) Lela said she had never married but had deep, meaningful relationships with both men and women. She said her reading at age 37 and a conversation with Edgar Cayce helped her understand this. The reading was given on the afternoon of February 22, 1940 in Cayce’s home in Virginia Beach, with Lela present. Later that afternoon, about sunset, Lela said she stepped outside the Cayce home for a cigarette and to reflect on the day’s events. A few minutes later, to her surprise, Edgar Cayce also stepped onto the porch for a cigarette and they had a few moments of quiet conversation together. They had not met before that day. Mr. Cayce asked what she thought of her reading and she said she wasn’t sure she understood it, but that Hugh Lynn (Edgar Cayce’s son) had offered to go over it with her. He had already mentioned that he (HLC) could not recall any life reading that had given past incarnations only of the opposite sex of the recipient of the reading. Edgar Cayce said that was interesting (he of course had no memory of the reading and rarely read the transcript immediately after a reading.) He then said, “You know, at 12 your mother took you to a doctor. Your ovaries weren’t developing, and they still haven’t fully developed, and this life will be a special opportunity for you to develop relationships at levels that we all need to understand better.” Lela was amazed, because she had indeed been taken Lto a gynecologist at 12 and given hormone therapy for some time. She said, “It’s a wonder I didn’t develop an udder.” She added, “Not only was this a startling demonstration of Edgar Cayce’s psychic ability at a conscious level, but those comments, my reading, and my life have clarified the reality of the deep and rich life paths and opportunities for soul development that we all choose.” I’ll bet the assistants and residents who are with Lela in Boseman are having quite time. She’s quite a lady.
