I always thought that tumbleweed was a natural part of the West. I was surprised and dismayed to discover it wasn't. It is another by product of the invasion of the white man into Indian territory. The tumbleweed was introduced inadvertently when Ukrainian farmers brought flax to the western United States. After the Ukrainian farmers destroyed the native grasses the tumbleweed spread. Today it is as much a part of our image landscape of the old west as the buffalo, but it is an erroneous image. I just wonder how many more of these images we hold in our minds eye that are also false?
