Haa Maruawe! (Hello Everybody!)
"Fools Crow" by Thomas E. Mails is one of my favorite books. It is similar to the book "Black Elk Speaks" by John G. Neihardt, in that Frank Fools Crow was a Teton Sioux Holy Man and Ceremonial Chief. He was also Black Elk's nephew.
In much the same way Black Elk did, Fools Crow recounted his life to a writer (Thomas E. Mails) who published the work. He also tells about his experiences in performing ceremonies, recalls visions, etc.
While most of the time, Traditional Elders won't discuss these things, Fools Crow and Black Elk both saw the way that the Old Ways were slipping away. They also saw the future - when the younger generations would not know the Old Ways at all. So, they both decided that the Old Ways needed to be taught. Thank goodness, these two great men had the foresight to leave us with so much wisdom!
