Oglala Sioux Tribe Victims Assistance
in Indian Country (VAIC)
The Oglala Sioux Tribe Victims Assistance in Indian Country (VAIC) program provides direct services to victims of crimes and promotes coordinated public and private efforts to aid victims within the community of Pine Ridge Reservation. The people served are victims of assault, child physical and sexual abuse, domestic violence, elderly abuse, homicide and other crimes against persons.
VAIC clients have been traumatized by the crimes committed against them and VAIC helps them through the healing process. Among other things, VAIC provides counseling and referrals to shelters and related support services, provides advocacy to the criminal justice court, works with the State Attorney and the FBI, and provides personal advocacy, advising victims of their rights and remedies.
Last fiscal year they serviced almost 900 people, and each year the number increases. VAIC is run by a director and 3 staff members, including one who is an elderly advocate fluent in the Lakota language. VAIC is funded by the Department of Justice and is not a 501(c)(3).
The VAIC /client relationship can be long term. The clients are young and old, male and female. The needs of these victims are great, including material needs. To this end, VAIC provides donated clothing and household goods, food and other grocery type items to assist those in distress.
